How you talk about living with diabetes is a personal choice but below are 3 reasons why you should share!
Hiding Diabetes is a Lot of Work
Running to the bathroom to inject, waiting until the best moment to take that insulin correction. Imagine just pulling out your insulin pen or pump to bolus? Or prioritizing your health over concerns about the judgements from other people? I used to to do all of the things to not show that I lived with diabetes. I didn’t recognize how exhausting it all was until I stopped hiding. Everyone is living with something that they have to manage and being able to treat diabetes as something that is part of my overall health was such a relief. My insulin pen now hangs out with my friends just as I do.

Improve Your Relationships by Opening Up About Challenges
A lot of us were trained from an early age to just keep on grinding without showing any kink in our armor. Hiding diabetes was just another way I was pushing away people and their support. Even though it is not necessarily the intention our self protection can be another excuse to not be truly vulnerable. Learning how to speak about diabetes with my friends unveiled a new level of closeness I never had before. Diabetes management can be part of our every moment- why aren’t you sharing those moments with the people you love?
Your Health Matters
It matters!!! I know you might have been told yourself reasons why it isn’t possible or why you eating that ‘bad’ thing is what put you in this position with diabetes. BUT you deserve to be happy and healthy. It is not a linear journey and self acceptance with diabetes is certainly a process. Sharing your journey with your support system is another amazing tool that leads to overall health improvement.
You don’t need to go to an extreme and you who tell is completely up to you. Start with one friend and go from there. I believe in you!
